Refractive Surgery Co-Management
Refractive surgery co-management is a partnership between an optometrist and a refractive surgeon (ophthalmologist) to provide comprehensive eye care for patients undergoing vision correction surgery like LASIK. The optometrist handles the pre-operative evaluation, referring the patient to the surgeon, and manages post-operative care and long-term follow-up. The surgeon performs the procedure. This collaboration ensures patients receive continuous, specialized care throughout the process, from initial consultation to recovery and ongoing eye health.
The Co-Management Process
- 1. Initial Consultation and Pre-Operative Evaluation:.Your optometrist assesses your overall eye health, discusses your vision goals, and determines if you are a suitable candidate for refractive surgery.
- 2. Referral to Surgeon:.If you are a good candidate, your optometrist refers you to a trusted refractive surgeon, sharing relevant patient information.
- 3. Surgical Procedure:.The refractive surgeon performs the surgical procedure to reshape the cornea and correct your vision.
- 4. Post-Operative Care:.After the surgery, you return to your optometrist for scheduled follow-up appointments to monitor healing, manage any complications, and ensure your vision is improving as expected.
- 5. Ongoing Eye Care:.Regular annual eye exams with your optometrist continue to maintain optimal vision health and address any ongoing concerns.
