Glaucoma Management

Glaucoma is the 2nd leading cause of blindness, but it can be relatively easily managed when caught early

Glaucoma Management

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. It is caused by increased pressure within the eye (intraocular pressure, or IOP). Management of glaucoma aims to lower IOP and prevent further damage to the optic nerve. There are really no symptoms of early developing glaucoma, so regular comprehensive eye exams are crucial to diagnosis.

Treatment Options:

Eye drops: These are the first-line treatment for most glaucoma patients. They work by lowering IOP through various mechanisms, such as reducing fluid production or improving drainage.

Surgery: If eye drops are not effective or if IOP is too high, surgery may be necessary. Surgical options include:

Trabeculectomy: A procedure that creates a new drainage channel for fluid from the eye.

Implants: Small tubes or devices that can be implanted in the eye to help drain fluid.

Laser therapy:Laser treatment can be used to open up the drainage channels in the eye or to destroy cells that produce fluid.
